Egg White and Alum Compress for Sprains

A traditional topical remedy using egg white and alum to create a cooling compress for treating sprains. This historical treatment was believed to reduce swelling and provide relief.

Ingredients

  • 1 large egg white Egg white (Use fresh egg white only, discard yolk)
  • 1 walnut-sized piece (approximately 1 tablespoon) Alum (Potassium alum, available at pharmacies)
  • 2 pieces Lint or clean cloth (Large enough to cover the sprained area)

Instructions

  1. 1Separate the egg white from the yolk and place the white into a clean saucer or small bowl.
  2. 2Add the walnut-sized piece of alum to the egg white. Stir continuously with a spoon or stick until the mixture becomes a thick jelly consistency.
  3. 3Spread a portion of the jelly mixture onto a piece of lint or cloth large enough to cover the sprained area. Apply the compress directly to the sprain.
  4. 4Keep the injured limb in a horizontal position. Change the compress for a fresh one as often as it gets warm or dry, reapplying the jelly mixture to new pieces of lint as needed.
