Compound Infusion of Senna
A traditional medicinal herbal infusion made with senna leaves and ginger root, historically used as a purgative remedy. This recipe is for historical reference only and should not be prepared or consumed without consulting a qualified healthcare professional.
Ingredients
- 1.5 ounces Senna leaves (Approximately 42 grams; medicinal herb - consult healthcare professional before use)
- 1 drachm Fresh ginger root, sliced (Approximately 1/8 ounce or 3.5 grams)
- 1 pint Boiling water (Approximately 2 cups or 475 ml)
Instructions
- 1Measure out 1.5 ounces of senna leaves. Slice the ginger root thinly to yield approximately 1 drachm (3.5 grams). Bring 1 pint of water to a boil.
- 2Place the senna leaves and sliced ginger root in a heat-safe vessel. Pour the pint of boiling water over the herbs. Cover the vessel lightly to allow some steam to escape while retaining heat.
- 3Allow the mixture to macerate (steep) for one hour in the lightly covered vessel. Do not disturb during this time.
- 4After one hour, strain the infusion through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove all plant material. Press gently to extract all liquid. The resulting liquor is ready for use as directed by a medical professional.
