Chutney Pickle Compound Butter (with Optional Parfait & Caffeine)
A unique and versatile recipe for a savory compound butter infused with tangy chutney and crunchy pickles. This butter can be enjoyed on its own as a spread or, following historical context, incorporated into an adventurous savory parfait with a hint of caffeine for a truly unexpected flavor experience.
Ingredients
- 1 stick (113g / 1/2 cup) Unsalted Butter, softened (Ensure butter is at room temperature for easy mixing.)
- 1 tablespoon Chutney (Use your favorite variety, such as mango, apple, or tomato chutney.)
- 2 tablespoons Finely Chopped Pickles (Dill pickles or gherkins work well; ensure they are minced very small for even distribution throughout the butter.)
- 0.25 teaspoon Salt (Optional, adjust to taste, especially if using salted butter or salty pickles.)
- 0.125 teaspoon Black Pepper (Optional, freshly ground for best flavor.)
- 4 ounces (113g) Cream Cheese, softened (For the optional parfait base. Ensure it's softened for smooth mixing.)
- 0.25 cup (60ml) Cold Heavy Cream (For the optional parfait base. Keep chilled until ready to whip.)
- 35 mg Caffeine Powder (For the optional parfait. The original reference 'Caffeine, 35.' is ambiguous; 35mg is a common, safe dose. Alternatively, use 1 tablespoon of strong brewed coffee or espresso for flavor and a milder caffeine effect. Handle caffeine powder with extreme care due to potency.)
- 0 as needed Crackers or Toasted Bread (For layering in the optional parfait.)
- 0 as needed Fresh Herbs, chopped (For garnish on the optional parfait, such as cilantro, chives, or parsley.)
Instructions
- 1Take the unsalted butter out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature until thoroughly softened, about 30-60 minutes. This ensures easy mixing and a smooth compound butter.
- 2While the butter softens, finely chop the pickles. Ensure they are minced very small for even distribution throughout the butter.
- 3In a small mixing bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter, chutney, finely chopped pickles, and the optional salt and black pepper.
- 4Using a fork or a small spatula, thoroughly mix all the ingredients together until they are well combined and the chutney and pickles are evenly distributed throughout the butter. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- 5If serving the compound butter on its own, spoon it onto a piece of parchment paper or plastic wrap. Roll it into a log shape, twist the ends, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up. This makes it easier to slice and serve. Skip this step if proceeding directly to the parfait assembly.
- 6If making the optional parfait, in a separate bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, cold heavy cream, and caffeine powder (or strong coffee/espresso). Whip with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Be careful not to overmix the heavy cream.
- 7To assemble the parfait, take individual parfait glasses or small bowls. Create layers starting with crumbled crackers or toasted bread, followed by a dollop of the chutney pickle compound butter, then a layer of the caffeine-infused cream cheese mixture. Repeat the layers until the glass is full, finishing with a layer of the cream mixture. Garnish with fresh chopped herbs.
- 8Serve the chutney pickle compound butter immediately with bread or crackers, or serve the assembled parfaits chilled. Enjoy this unique flavor combination!
