Bread and Milk
A classic, comforting nursery dish consisting of bread soaked in hot milk. While simple, the author notes that cutting the bread very small improves the appearance, and a pinch of salt is essential to counter any insipidity. The author strongly advises against the 'economical' method of using water, recommending pure milk for its nutritional value for children.
Ingredients
- 2 slices Bread slices (white or whole wheat) (Stale bread works well; cut very small as per original instructions)
- 1.5 cups Whole milk (The author advises against diluting with water)
- 1 pinch Salt (Essential to remove insipidity)
Instructions
- 1Cut the bread slices into very small cubes or pieces. Place them into a serving bowl.
- 2Pour the milk into a saucepan and heat over medium heat until it reaches a boil.
- 3Immediately pour the boiling milk over the cut bread. Add a small pinch of salt to taste and stir gently. Let sit for a minute to allow the bread to soften and absorb the milk before serving.
