Beef or Mutton Baked with Potatoes
A hearty layered casserole of seasoned meat and creamy mashed potatoes, baked until golden. Similar to a cottage pie or shepherd's pie.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Potatoes (For boiling and mashing)
- 2 whole Small onions, peeled (For mashing with potatoes)
- 0.25 cup Milk (To moisten the potato mixture)
- 1 large Egg, beaten (For binding the potato mixture)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (For potato mixture)
- 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (For potato mixture)
- 1.5 pounds Beef or mutton, sliced or chops (Thinly sliced beef or mutton chops)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (For seasoning meat)
- 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper (For seasoning meat)
- 1 medium Onion, finely chopped (Optional, for additional onion flavor with meat)
- 1 tablespoon Butter (For greasing the baking dish)
Instructions
- 1Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water, add a pinch of salt, and bring to a boil. Cook until tender when pierced with a fork, about 20-25 minutes.
- 2Drain the potatoes and peel them while still warm. Place the peeled potatoes and the 2 small onions in a large bowl or mortar. Pound or mash them together until smooth. Add the milk, beaten egg, salt, and pepper, and mix until the consistency is like a thick batter.
- 3Season the beef slices or mutton chops on both sides with salt and pepper. If desired, sprinkle with the finely chopped onion for additional flavor.
- 4Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously rub the bottom and sides of a pudding dish or casserole dish with butter.
- 5Spread a layer of the mashed potato mixture on the bottom of the prepared dish, about 1/2 inch thick. Add a layer of seasoned meat slices or chops. Continue alternating layers of potato mixture and meat, ending with a layer of potato mixture on top. The top layer should completely cover the meat.
- 6Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour, until the top is golden brown and the meat is cooked through. The edges should be bubbling.
- 7Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to set and makes serving easier.
