Barley Water for the Sick Chamber
A soothing, easily digestible barley water traditionally prepared for invalids and those recovering from illness. This gentle beverage is made with pearl barley and provides hydration and nourishment.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon Pearl barley or barley flour (Robinson's patent barley was a prepared barley flour; modern pearl barley flour or finely ground pearl barley works well)
- 1 tablespoon Cold water (For making the paste)
- 1 quart Boiling water (Approximately 4 cups)
Instructions
- 1In a small bowl, combine the pearl barley flour with the cold water. Mix smoothly until you have a lump-free paste.
- 2Gradually add the quart of boiling water to the barley paste, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
- 3Transfer the mixture to a saucepan if not already in one. Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 4Remove from heat and allow the barley water to cool completely. Once cold, strain through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove any solids.
- 5Serve the barley water at room temperature or chilled. Store any remaining barley water in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
