Antiseptic Throat Gargle with Muriatic Acid
A historical medicinal gargle combining diluted muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) with herbal decoction for treating throat inflammation and removing mucus. This is a historical remedy and should NOT be prepared or used - modern medical treatments are safer and more effective.
Ingredients
- 0.5 drachm (approximately 1.8 ml) Muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) (DANGEROUS - Do not use. Historical ingredient only. Modern equivalent would be medical-grade diluted hydrochloric acid under professional supervision.)
- 7 ounces (approximately 207 ml) Decoction of black-currant leaves or barley-water (Herbal base liquid to dilute the acid)
Instructions
- 1Prepare 7 ounces of decoction using either black-currant leaves or barley-water by boiling the plant material in water and straining. Allow to cool to room temperature.
- 2Carefully measure half a drachm (approximately 1.8 ml) of muriatic acid and mix it thoroughly with the 7 ounces of cooled herbal decoction. Stir gently to combine completely.
- 3Use as a gargle for reducing throat inflammation before suppuration occurs, for relaxed sore throat, or when the throat is clogged with viscid mucus. The quantity of acid may be increased slightly if more detergent action is needed. WARNING: This is a historical remedy only - do not prepare or use without medical supervision.
