WHISKEY IRISH HOT
This warming classic from 1917 substitutes the smoky notes of Scotch for the smooth, rounded character of Irish whiskey in a traditional hot toddy preparation. A simple yet comforting blend of hot water, sugar, and whiskey is finished with a twist of lemon and a dusting of nutmeg for aromatic depth. It serves as an excellent nightcap or a soothing remedy for cold evenings.
Ingredients
- 1.5 ounces Irish Whiskey (Originally 'Irish Whiskey' (substituted for Scotch). 1.5 oz is a standard jigger.)
- 1 teaspoon Granulated sugar (Originally '1 lump sugar'. Converted to 1 teaspoon or 1 sugar cube for a single drink.)
- 4 ounces Boiling water (Quantity estimated to fill a standard hot water glass.)
- 1 strip Lemon peel (For garnish.)
- 1 pinch Nutmeg (Freshly grated.)
Instructions
- 1Preheat a hot water glass or mug by rinsing it with warm water.
- 2Add the sugar and a small splash of boiling water to the glass. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- 3Pour in the Irish Whiskey, then fill the remainder of the glass with boiling water.
- 4Stir gently to combine. Twist the lemon peel over the drink to release oils and drop it in. Finish by grating a pinch of nutmeg on top.
