GILLETTE COCKTAIL—Chicago Style

GILLETTE COCKTAIL—Chicago Style

This refreshing pre-Prohibition cocktail combines the botanical sweetness of Old Tom gin with the tart brightness of fresh lime juice. A touch of superfine sugar balances the acidity, resulting in a crisp, sophisticated drink with a smooth, clean finish. Served ice-cold in a stemmed glass, it captures the elegant spirit of classic Chicago bartending.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Ice cubes (Originally 'Lump Ice'. Quantity estimated for mixing.)
  • 1/2 lime Lime (Juiced.)
  • 2 1/4 ounces Old Tom Gin (Originally '1 1/2 jiggers'. Converted to modern measurement (1 jigger = 1.5 oz, so 1.5 * 1.5 = 2.25 oz). Burnette's brand specified in original.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Superfine sugar (Bar sugar) (Originally 'Bar Sugar'. Superfine sugar dissolves best in cold cocktails.)

Instructions

  1. 1Fill a large mixing glass with ice cubes.
  2. 2Squeeze the juice from the lime half into the glass. Add the Old Tom Gin and superfine sugar.
  3. 3Stir the mixture well with a bar spoon until the outside of the glass feels cold. Strain the liquid into a chilled cocktail glass.
