DURKEE COCKTAIL

DURKEE COCKTAIL

This refreshing 1917 classic combines the rich, molasses notes of Jamaica rum with the bright citrus zest of Curaçao and lemon juice. The addition of superfine sugar balances the tartness, while a splash of soda water creates a lively effervescence perfect for sipping. Served in a tall glass, the Durkee Cocktail offers a sophisticated yet approachable historical libation that bridges the gap between a sour and a fizz.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup Shaved ice (Quantity estimated for filling the shaker.)
  • 1 tablespoon Superfine sugar (Originally 'Bar Sugar'. Superfine sugar dissolves easier in cold drinks.)
  • 4 dashes Lemon juice (Approximately 1/2 teaspoon.)
  • 3 dashes Curaçao (Originally 'Curacoa'. An orange-flavored liqueur.)
  • 1.5 ounces Jamaica Rum (Originally '1 jigger'. Converted to modern standard measurement (1.5 oz).)
  • 3 ounces Soda water (Originally 'Plain Soda'. Quantity estimated to fill the glass.)

Instructions

  1. 1Fill a large bar glass or cocktail shaker about 2/3 full with shaved ice. Add the superfine sugar, lemon juice, Curaçao, and Jamaica Rum.
  2. 2Shake the mixture vigorously until well chilled and the sugar is dissolved. Strain the liquid into a tall, thin glass (such as a Collins or Highball glass).
  3. 3Fill the remainder of the glass with soda water. Stir gently to combine without losing carbonation and serve immediately.
