This refreshing 1917 classic transforms robust red Bordeaux wine into a delightful, chilled punch perfect for warm afternoons. Sweetened with bar sugar and brightened with zesty lemon juice and fresh orange slices, the Claret Punch offers a sophisticated balance of fruity and dry notes. Ingredients
- 2/3 cup Shaved ice (Quantity estimated to fill a large bar glass 2/3 full.)
- 3 teaspoons Superfine sugar (Bar sugar) (Originally '3 teaspoonfuls Bar Sugar'.)
- 4 dashes Lemon juice (Freshly squeezed recommended.)
- 2 slices Orange slices
- 3 ounces Claret (Red Bordeaux wine) (Originally '2 jiggers'. Converted to modern measurement (1 jigger = 1.5 oz).)
- 1 handful Fresh fruit (berries or orange slice) (For garnish. Quantity estimated.)
Instructions
- 1Fill a large bar glass or cocktail shaker approximately 2/3 full with shaved ice. Add the sugar, lemon juice, orange slices, and Claret.
- 2Shake the mixture vigorously to chill and blend the flavors. Strain the liquid into a thin serving glass.
- 3Dress the drink with fresh fruit (such as berries or an orange slice) and serve immediately with straws.
