BLUE BLAZER
This spectacular classic cocktail is a dramatic showstopper featuring Scotch whiskey set ablaze and poured between two mugs to create a continuous stream of blue fire. The unique preparation warms the spirit and caramelizes the sugar, resulting in a soothing, hot toddy-style drink with rich, smoky undertones and a velvety texture. Traditionally served with a twist of lemon peel for a bright aromatic finish, it is an elegant and warming choice for cold winter evenings.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces Scotch whiskey (Originally '1 Wineglass (or jigger)'. Used 2 ounces (approx. wineglass size) for better pouring volume.)
- 1 teaspoon Bar sugar (superfine sugar) (Originally '1 teaspoonful Bar Sugar'.)
- 1 ounce Boiling water (Originally 'a little Hot Water'. Estimated 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) to dissolve sugar and provide safe volume.)
- 1 strip Lemon peel (For garnish.)
Instructions
- 1Ensure you have two heat-resistant mugs (silver or pewter are traditional and preferred, but thick heat-proof ceramic works) and a long lighter. Clear the area of any flammable items.
- 2In one of the mugs, combine the bar sugar and boiling water. Stir briefly until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- 3Add the Scotch whiskey to the mug with the dissolved sugar. Carefully ignite the mixture using a long match or lighter. CAUTION: The flame may be faint blue and hard to see; handle with extreme care.
- 4While the mixture is blazing, carefully pour it from one mug to the other. Repeat this motion 4 to 5 times, increasing the distance between the mugs as you pour to create a continuous stream of blue fire. This mixes the ingredients and aerates the drink.
- 5Pour the finished drink into a heat-proof glass or mug. Twist the lemon peel over the top to release its oils, then drop it into the drink as a garnish. Serve immediately while hot.
