Stewed Prunes with Lemon

Stewed Prunes with Lemon

A simple and refreshing dessert or snack made with stewed prunes and a hint of lemon. This modernized version offers a balanced sweetness and a touch of acidity.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Dried Prunes (Pitted or unpitted, your preference)
  • 4 cups Water (For soaking and cooking)
  • 0.25 cup Granulated Sugar (Adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice (Freshly squeezed)
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Zest (Optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. 1Wash the prunes thoroughly under cold running water and pick them over to remove any stems or debris. Place the prunes in a saucepan.
  2. 2Cover the prunes with 4 cups of cold water. Soak for at least two hours, or up to overnight in the refrigerator.
  3. 3Place the saucepan with the prunes and soaking water over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook until the prunes are very soft, about 30 minutes.
  4. 4Stir in the sugar and lemon juice. Add lemon zest if desired. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the flavors have melded.
  5. 5Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving. The stewed prunes can be served warm or chilled. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
