Stewed Prunes with Lemon
A simple and refreshing dessert or snack made with stewed prunes and a hint of lemon. This modernized version offers a balanced sweetness and a touch of acidity.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Dried Prunes (Pitted or unpitted, your preference)
- 4 cups Water (For soaking and cooking)
- 0.25 cup Granulated Sugar (Adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice (Freshly squeezed)
- 1 teaspoon Lemon Zest (Optional, for extra flavor)
Instructions
- 1Wash the prunes thoroughly under cold running water and pick them over to remove any stems or debris. Place the prunes in a saucepan.
- 2Cover the prunes with 4 cups of cold water. Soak for at least two hours, or up to overnight in the refrigerator.
- 3Place the saucepan with the prunes and soaking water over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook until the prunes are very soft, about 30 minutes.
- 4Stir in the sugar and lemon juice. Add lemon zest if desired. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the flavors have melded.
- 5Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving. The stewed prunes can be served warm or chilled. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
