Steamed Winter Squash
A simple and healthy way to cook winter squash, seasoned with butter and a touch of sweetness.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Winter Squash (Butternut, Acorn, or Kabocha) (About 1 medium squash)
- 2 tablespoons Butter (Salted or unsalted)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (Or to taste)
- 0.25 teaspoon Black Pepper (Freshly ground, or to taste)
- 1 teaspoon Sugar (Optional, adjust to taste)
Instructions
- 1Wash the winter squash thoroughly. Cut the squash into manageable pieces (about 2-inch chunks). Remove the seeds and stringy portion from the center of each piece. Pare (peel) the skin from each piece using a vegetable peeler or knife.
- 2Place the squash pieces in a steamer basket or strainer set over a pot of boiling water. Make sure the water doesn't touch the squash. Cover the pot and steam for 30 minutes, or until the squash is soft and easily pierced with a fork.
- 3Remove the steamed squash from the steamer basket and place it in a bowl. Mash the squash with a fork or potato masher until smooth. Add butter, salt, and pepper. If the squash is not sweet enough for your liking, add a small quantity of sugar (about 1 teaspoon) and mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
