Scalloped Onions

A simple and comforting side dish of scalloped onions baked with a creamy white sauce and buttery cracker crumbs.

Ingredients

  • 2 large Onions (Boiled and quartered)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (For baking dish and topping)
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour (For white sauce)
  • 2 cups Milk (For white sauce)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt (For white sauce)
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (For white sauce)
  • 0.5 cup Cracker crumbs (Buttered)

Instructions

  1. 1Place the onions in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly. Cut the boiled onions into quarters.
  2. 2In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes, or until thickened. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper.
  3. 3Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Butter a baking dish. Place the quartered onions in the buttered baking dish. Cover with the white sauce. Sprinkle with buttered cracker crumbs. Place on the center rack in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the crumbs are golden brown and the sauce is bubbly.
