Modern German Toast with Apples
A modernized version of German Toast, incorporating apples and techniques from a related oatmeal recipe for a delicious and comforting breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
- 2 Eggs (Large)
- 0.25 teaspoon Salt
- 1 tablespoon Sugar
- 0.5 cup Milk
- 4 slices Bread (Thick-cut preferred)
- 2 tablespoons Butter (For frying)
- 0.5 Apple (Peeled, cored, and sliced)
- 0.25 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
Instructions
- 1In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, salt, sugar, and milk until well combined.
- 2Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated. Let the bread soak for about 30 seconds per side to absorb the mixture.
- 3Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced apples and sprinkle with cinnamon. Cook until the apples are softened and slightly caramelized, about 5 minutes.
- 4Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Place the soaked bread slices in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Add the cooked apples to the skillet during the last minute of cooking to warm them up.
- 5Serve the German toast immediately, topped with the caramelized apples. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup.
