Modern German Toast with Apples

Modern German Toast with Apples

A modernized version of German Toast, incorporating apples and techniques from a related oatmeal recipe for a delicious and comforting breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 2 Eggs (Large)
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 4 slices Bread (Thick-cut preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (For frying)
  • 0.5 Apple (Peeled, cored, and sliced)
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. 1In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, salt, sugar, and milk until well combined.
  2. 2Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated. Let the bread soak for about 30 seconds per side to absorb the mixture.
  3. 3Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced apples and sprinkle with cinnamon. Cook until the apples are softened and slightly caramelized, about 5 minutes.
  4. 4Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Place the soaked bread slices in the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Add the cooked apples to the skillet during the last minute of cooking to warm them up.
  5. 5Serve the German toast immediately, topped with the caramelized apples. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup.
