Modern French Toast

Modern French Toast

A classic breakfast or dessert, updated for modern tastes. Stale bread is transformed into a delicious treat with a rich custard and a perfectly browned exterior.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices Stale bread (Use slightly stale bread for best results. Brioche, challah, or white bread work well.)
  • 3 Large eggs
  • 0.5 cup Whole milk (Can substitute with half-and-half or cream for a richer flavor.)
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.125 teaspoon Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (For greasing the griddle or pan.)

Instructions

  1. 1In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve for a smoother texture. This step ensures a silky custard.
  2. 2Place the bread slices in the custard mixture, one at a time, ensuring each slice is fully submerged. Let the bread soak for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is saturated but not falling apart. The soaking time depends on the bread's density and staleness.
  3. 3Heat a griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Add butter to grease the surface. Once the butter is melted and the griddle is hot, carefully place the soaked bread slices onto the griddle, ensuring not to overcrowd. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
  4. 4Serve immediately with your favorite toppings, such as maple syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar. Enjoy!
