German Red Cabbage
A simple and flavorful German-style red cabbage dish, perfect as a side.
Ingredients
- 1 medium head Red Cabbage (About 2 pounds)
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt
- 1 tablespoon Onion (Finely chopped)
- 0.125 teaspoon Nutmeg (Freshly grated, a few gratings)
- 0.0625 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (Pinch)
- 2 tablespoons Vinegar (Apple cider or red wine vinegar)
- 0.5 tablespoon Sugar
- 1 quart Water
Instructions
- 1Slice the red cabbage thinly. Soak the sliced cabbage in cold water for about 5 minutes. Drain well.
- 2In a stewpan or large pot, combine the drained red cabbage, water, butter, salt, finely chopped onion, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper. Cover the pot.
- 3Cook over medium-low heat until the cabbage is tender, about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 4Add the vinegar and sugar to the cabbage. Stir well to combine.
- 5Cook for an additional 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld. Serve hot.
