Coffee Rolls
Classic coffee rolls, a sweet and yeasty treat perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Milk (Warm, about 110°F)
- 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast (Equivalent to 1 package or 1½ yeast cakes)
- 0.5 cup Butter (Softened)
- 0.5 cup Lard (Softened. Can substitute with shortening or more butter.)
- 0.5 cup Sugar
- 4 cups All-purpose flour (Approximately, plus more for dusting)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt
- 1 Egg (Optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
- 1In a large bowl, warm the milk to about 110°F. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
- 2Add the softened butter, lard (or shortening), sugar, salt, and half of the flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- 3Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes.
- 4Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- 5Punch down the dough. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it into a large rectangle (about 12x18 inches). Spread softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon (optional). Roll the dough up tightly from one of the long edges. Cut into 1-inch thick slices.
- 6Place the rolls in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
- 7Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with an egg wash (optional). Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 8Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Frost with your favorite icing, if desired.
