Buttercups
A simple candy recipe using molasses and sugar, modernized for easier preparation.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Molasses (Original recipe calls for 2 cups, which is excessive. Reduced to 1 cup.)
- 0.5 cup Granulated Sugar (Original recipe calls for 1 cup, which is excessive. Reduced to 1/2 cup.)
- 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter (For added richness)
- 0.5 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (Enhances the flavor)
Instructions
- 1In a medium saucepan, combine the molasses, sugar, and butter.
- 2Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches the hard-crack stage (300-310°F or 149-154°C) on a candy thermometer. This will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
- 3Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- 4Pour the mixture onto a lightly greased baking sheet or silicone mat. Let cool completely until hardened. This will take approximately 10 minutes.
- 5Once cooled and hardened, break the candy into small pieces.
