Buttercups

Buttercups

A simple candy recipe using molasses and sugar, modernized for easier preparation.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Molasses (Original recipe calls for 2 cups, which is excessive. Reduced to 1 cup.)
  • 0.5 cup Granulated Sugar (Original recipe calls for 1 cup, which is excessive. Reduced to 1/2 cup.)
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted Butter (For added richness)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (Enhances the flavor)

Instructions

  1. 1In a medium saucepan, combine the molasses, sugar, and butter.
  2. 2Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches the hard-crack stage (300-310°F or 149-154°C) on a candy thermometer. This will take approximately 10-15 minutes.
  3. 3Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. 4Pour the mixture onto a lightly greased baking sheet or silicone mat. Let cool completely until hardened. This will take approximately 10 minutes.
  5. 5Once cooled and hardened, break the candy into small pieces.
