Baking Powder Biscuits
Classic baking powder biscuits, perfect for breakfast or as a side. This recipe is modernized for ease of use and consistent results.
Ingredients
- 2.5 cups All-purpose flour (Bread flour can also be used for a slightly different texture.)
- 4 teaspoons Baking powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 2 tablespoons Vegetable shortening (Can substitute with lard or butter, chilled.)
- 0.75 cup Milk (Cold milk is best.)
- 1 tablespoon Butter, melted (For brushing the tops of the biscuits.)
Instructions
- 1In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- 2Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 3Gradually add the milk, mixing with a knife or spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
- 4Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently pat the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter or a knife.
- 5Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with melted butter. Bake in a preheated oven at 450°F (232°C) for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
