Ingredients

  • 1 pound Asparagus spears (Choose fresh, firm spears)
  • 4 cups Water (For boiling the asparagus)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt (To season the water)
  • 2 slices Bread slices (Your favorite type of bread)

  • 1 tablespoon All-purpose flour (For milk sauce (optional))
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (To taste)

Instructions

  1. 1Wash the asparagus spears thoroughly. Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus.
  2. 2Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot. Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Add the asparagus and boil for 2-4 minutes, or until tender-crisp. Drain the asparagus immediately.
  3. 3Toast the bread slices until golden brown.
  4. 4Spread butter evenly over the toasted bread. Arrange the boiled asparagus on top of the buttered toast. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. 5Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 1 tablespoon of flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 0.5 cup of milk until smooth. Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour the milk sauce over the toasted bread. Arrange the boiled asparagus on top of the sauce.
