Asparagus on Toast with Butter or Milk Sauce
A simple and elegant way to serve asparagus, either with melted butter or a creamy milk-based sauce, all atop toasted bread.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Asparagus spears (Choose fresh, firm spears)
- 4 cups Water (For boiling the asparagus)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (To season the water)
- 2 slices Bread slices (Your favorite type of bread)
- 2 tablespoons Butter (For buttered toast or milk sauce)
- 0.5 cup Milk (For milk sauce (optional))
- 1 tablespoon All-purpose flour (For milk sauce (optional))
- 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (To taste)
Instructions
- 1Wash the asparagus spears thoroughly. Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus.
- 2Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot. Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Add the asparagus and boil for 2-4 minutes, or until tender-crisp. Drain the asparagus immediately.
- 3Toast the bread slices until golden brown.
- 4Spread butter evenly over the toasted bread. Arrange the boiled asparagus on top of the buttered toast. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- 5Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in 1 tablespoon of flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 0.5 cup of milk until smooth. Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour the milk sauce over the toasted bread. Arrange the boiled asparagus on top of the sauce.
