Apple Sauce
A simple and classic apple sauce recipe, perfect as a side dish or dessert topping.
Ingredients
- 4 medium Sour Apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) (Original recipe calls for 8 apples, adjusted for modern portions)
- 0.5 cup Granulated Sugar (Adjusted from 1 cup for modern taste)
- 0.5 cup Water
- 1 strip Lemon Rind (Thin shaving from rind of a lemon)
Instructions
- 1Wipe, quarter, core, and pare the apples.
- 2In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and lemon rind. Bring to a boil over medium heat and boil for 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the syrup slightly thickens.
- 3Remove the lemon rind from the syrup. Add enough apples to cover the bottom of the saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat, watching carefully and stirring occasionally, until the apples are soft (about 5-7 minutes). Remove the cooked apples and set aside. Continue cooking the remaining apples in batches until all are cooked.
- 4Strain the remaining syrup over the cooked apples. Stir gently to combine. Serve warm or chilled.
