Activating Yeast
This recipe describes how to activate dry or fresh yeast for baking. Activating yeast ensures it's alive and ready to leaven your dough.
Ingredients
- 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast (Equivalent to one 1/4 ounce packet or 1 yeast cake)
- 0.25 cup Lukewarm water (Approximately 105-115°F (40-46°C))
- 1 teaspoon Sugar (Optional, but helps activate the yeast)
Instructions
- 1In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar (if using).
- 2Let the mixture stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.
- 3Once the yeast is foamy, it's ready to be added to your recipe. If the yeast doesn't foam, it may be old or inactive and should be discarded.
