Activating Yeast

Activating Yeast

This recipe describes how to activate dry or fresh yeast for baking. Activating yeast ensures it's alive and ready to leaven your dough.

Ingredients

  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast (Equivalent to one 1/4 ounce packet or 1 yeast cake)
  • 0.25 cup Lukewarm water (Approximately 105-115°F (40-46°C))
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar (Optional, but helps activate the yeast)

Instructions

  1. 1In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, yeast, and sugar (if using).
  2. 2Let the mixture stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use.
  3. 3Once the yeast is foamy, it's ready to be added to your recipe. If the yeast doesn't foam, it may be old or inactive and should be discarded.
