Simple Tomato Sauce
A basic tomato sauce made with fresh tomatoes, simmered and strained for a smooth consistency. Great as a base for other sauces or dishes.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Tomatoes (About 8 medium tomatoes. Original recipe calls for 4 pounds, which is a large quantity.)
- 0.25 cup Water (Original recipe calls for two wineglasses of water.)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (Original recipe calls for two saltspoons of salt.)
- 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (Original recipe calls for one saltspoon of pepper.)
Instructions
- 1Wash the tomatoes and cut them in half.
- 2Place the halved tomatoes in a medium saucepan. Add water, salt, and pepper. Cover the saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- 3Reduce heat to low and simmer for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
- 4Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve or food mill to remove seeds and skins, creating a smooth sauce.
