Fried Bread with Raisin Sauce
A simple dish of fried bread topped with a sweet and savory raisin sauce, perfect as a side dish or a sweet treat.
Ingredients
- 6 slices Stale bread (Slightly stale is best for frying)
- 2 tablespoons Lard (Vegetable oil or butter can be substituted)
- 2 tablespoons Raisins (Golden raisins or sultanas work well too)
- 1 slice Cooked ham (About 1/4 inch thick, diced)
- 1 leaf Fresh sage (Finely chopped)
- 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons White vinegar
Instructions
- 1Cut the crusts off the bread and slice each piece about 1/2 inch thick.
- 2Heat the lard in a frying pan over medium heat. Fry the bread slices until golden brown on both sides. Remove from the pan and place on a platter.
- 3In a small saucepan, combine the raisins, diced ham, chopped sage, sugar, and vinegar. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the sauce thickens slightly, about 5 minutes.
- 4Pour the raisin sauce over the fried bread slices. Serve immediately, preferably with cold meat.
