Tea Cake No. 1
A simple tea cake recipe from 1888.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cupful Butter
- 1 1/4 cupfuls Sugar
- 1 1/2 pints Flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls Royal Baking Powder
- 1 teaspoonful Royal Extract Nutmeg
- as needed Milk
Instructions
- 1Sift flour, sugar, and baking powder together in a large bowl. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the nutmeg extract and milk, mixing until a soft dough forms that is easy to handle.
- 2Lightly flour a clean work surface. Roll out the dough to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out the tea cakes. Place the tea cakes on a greased baking sheet. Brush the tops with milk. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
