Orange Fritters

Orange Fritters

Delicious orange fritters made with a simple batter.

Ingredients

  • 4 oranges Oranges
  • 1 cupful All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoonful Baking powder
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 2 eggs Eggs
  • 1 cupful Whole milk
  • 1 tablespoonful Vegetable oil (Originally sweet oil. Substituted with vegetable oil for modern preference.)
  • as needed for frying Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter or vegetable shortening for modern preference.)
  • as needed for serving Powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. 1In a bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and vegetable oil. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, forming a batter similar to that of griddle cakes.
  2. 2Peel the oranges, removing all the white pith without breaking the fruit into pulp. Divide each orange into 4 or 5 pieces, following the natural divisions of the orange.
  3. 3Heat a generous amount of butter (or vegetable shortening) in a deep fryer or large pot until hot. Dip each orange piece into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated. Fry the battered orange pieces in the hot fat until they are deep yellow and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the fritters and place them on a napkin to drain excess oil.
  4. 4Serve the orange fritters immediately on a napkin, dusted with powdered sugar.
