Dressing for Turkey or Roast Meats
A classic dressing recipe for turkey or roast meats, adapted for modern kitchens.
Ingredients
- 3 cups Stale bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup Butter
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon Black pepper
- 1 Egg
- 1 tablespoon Dried summer savory (Originally Royal summer savory.)
- 1 tablespoon Dried sage (Originally Royal sage.)
- 1 cup Chopped oysters (optional)
- 2 tablespoons Warm water (Use as needed to moisten the mixture.)
Instructions
- 1If using stale bread, crumble it into coarse crumbs. Alternatively, use store-bought bread crumbs or crush crackers to a similar consistency.
- 2In a large bowl, combine the bread crumbs, melted butter, salt, pepper, egg, summer savory, and sage. If using, add the chopped oysters.
- 3Mix thoroughly. Add warm water, a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture is moistened but not soggy.
- 4Use the dressing to stuff a turkey or roast meats before cooking, or bake separately in a greased dish at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes, or until heated through and lightly browned.
