Doughnuts
A classic fried doughnut recipe from 1888.
Ingredients
- 0.5 cup Butter
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1.5 pints Flour
- 1.5 teaspoon Royal Baking Powder
- 1 Egg
- 1.25 cups Milk
- 1 teaspoon Royal Extract Nutmeg
- plenty Lard (For frying)
- as needed Sifted Sugar (For serving)
Instructions
- 1In a bowl, rub together 1/2 cupful of butter, 1 cupful of sugar, and 1 egg until smooth.
- 2Sift together 1 1/2 pints of flour and 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls of Royal Baking Powder.
- 3Add the sifted flour and baking powder to the butter mixture, along with 1 1/4 cupfuls of milk and 1 teaspoonful of Royal Extract Nutmeg. Mix into a soft dough.
- 4Well flour a board. Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch in thickness. Cut out doughnuts with a large biscuit cutter.
- 5Heat plenty of lard in a deep fryer or large pot until hot. Fry the doughnuts to a light brown color.
- 6Serve the doughnuts with sifted sugar sprinkled over them.
