Doughnuts

A classic fried doughnut recipe from 1888.

Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup Butter
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1.5 pints Flour
  • 1.5 teaspoon Royal Baking Powder
  • 1 Egg
  • 1.25 cups Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Royal Extract Nutmeg
  • plenty Lard (For frying)
  • as needed Sifted Sugar (For serving)

Instructions

  1. 1In a bowl, rub together 1/2 cupful of butter, 1 cupful of sugar, and 1 egg until smooth.
  2. 2Sift together 1 1/2 pints of flour and 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls of Royal Baking Powder.
  3. 3Add the sifted flour and baking powder to the butter mixture, along with 1 1/4 cupfuls of milk and 1 teaspoonful of Royal Extract Nutmeg. Mix into a soft dough.
  4. 4Well flour a board. Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch in thickness. Cut out doughnuts with a large biscuit cutter.
  5. 5Heat plenty of lard in a deep fryer or large pot until hot. Fry the doughnuts to a light brown color.
  6. 6Serve the doughnuts with sifted sugar sprinkled over them.
