Braised Beef
A classic braised beef recipe.
Ingredients
- 5 pounds Beef fillet, boneless
- 1 cup Onions, sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup Beef gravy (or beef broth)
- 1 cup Water, boiling
- 2 tablespoons Flour
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 1 tablespoon Catsup (ketchup)
Instructions
- 1Place the beef fillet (about 5-6 pounds) in a large pot or Dutch oven.
- 2Scatter the sliced onions over the beef. Sprinkle with salt. If you have beef gravy, add it to the cup of boiling water and pour over the meat. If not, use beef broth. Add the boiling water.
- 3Cover the pot lightly and cook slowly for 1 1/4 hours. Add more boiling water if the gravy reduces too much.
- 4When the beef is cooked, dredge it with flour.
- 5Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Set the floured beef in the hot oven. As the flour browns, baste with butter to glaze. Do not leave it in the oven for more than 10 minutes.
- 6Strain the gravy. Pour the fat off. Put the gravy into a saucepan with a little browned flour and the catsup. Boil until thickened.
- 7Pour a few teaspoonfuls of the gravy over the meat and serve the rest in a gravy boat.
