Apple Fritters
Classic apple fritters recipe.
Ingredients
- 4 large Apples
- 1/2 gill Wine
- 2 tablespoonfuls Sugar
- 1 teaspoonful Nutmeg (Originally Royal Extract Nutmeg.)
- 1 cupful Flour
- 1/2 teaspoonful Baking powder (Originally Royal Baking Powder.)
- 1 pinch Salt
- 2 eggs Eggs
- 1 cupful Milk
- 1 tablespoonful Sweet oil
- as needed Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter or vegetable shortening for frying.)
- as needed Sugar (For serving.)
Instructions
- 1Peel, core, and cut each apple into 4 slices. Place the apple slices in a bowl with the sugar, wine, and nutmeg. Cover with a plate and set aside to steep for 2 hours.
- 2Sift the flour, salt, and baking powder together in a bowl. Add the sweet oil, beaten eggs, and milk. Mix until a batter forms, similar to pancake batter.
- 3Heat a generous amount of butter or vegetable shortening in a deep skillet or fryer until hot. Dip each apple slice in the batter, ensuring it's fully coated. Fry the batter-covered apple slices in the hot fat until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove the fritters and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately, sprinkled with sugar.
