Stewed Prunes
A simple and classic dessert of stewed prunes, enhanced with lemon peel and a touch of port wine.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Dried Prunes (Pitted or unpitted, your preference)
- 4 cups Water
- 1 strip Lemon Peel (About 2 inches long, use a vegetable peeler)
- 2 tablespoons Port Wine (Optional, for added flavor)
Instructions
- 1Rinse the prunes under cold running water to remove any dust or debris.
- 2Place the washed prunes in a saucepan. Add the water and the strip of lemon peel. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- 3Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer gently for 30 minutes, or until the prunes are tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 4If desired, stir in the port wine during the last 5 minutes of cooking. This will add a richer flavor to the stewed prunes.
- 5Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Serve warm or chilled. The stewed prunes can be enjoyed on their own or with yogurt or ice cream.
