Simple Boiled Spinach
A basic recipe for preparing spinach, suitable as a side dish. Can be enhanced with eggs, cream, or nutmeg.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Fresh Spinach (About 1 pound fresh spinach)
- 8 cups Water (For washing and boiling)
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (For boiling water)
- 1 tablespoon Butter (Optional, for finishing)
- 2 large Hard-boiled Eggs (Optional, for serving)
- 2 tablespoons Cream (Optional, for serving)
- 0.125 teaspoon Nutmeg (Optional, for serving)
- 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice (Optional, for serving)
Instructions
- 1Fill two large buckets or bowls with cold water. Place the spinach in one bowl, allowing the dirt to settle to the bottom. Lift the spinach from the first bowl into the second bowl. Repeat this process one or two times until the spinach is clean.
- 2If the spinach stalks are large or tough, pick the leaves from the stalks. Discard the stalks.
- 3Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add salt. Add the spinach to the boiling water. Boil until the spinach is tender, about 10-15 minutes.
- 4Drain the spinach thoroughly. Chop the spinach finely using a knife or kitchen shears.
- 5Place the chopped spinach back in the saucepan. Add butter and heat through. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot. Optional: Top with halved hard-boiled eggs, a drizzle of cream, a pinch of nutmeg, or a squeeze of lemon juice.
