Simple Boiled Green Peas
A basic recipe for cooking dried green peas, enhanced with mint, butter, and a touch of sugar.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Dried Green Peas, Whole
- 6 cups Water (For soaking and boiling)
- 4 sprigs Fresh Mint Sprigs
- 2 tablespoons Butter
- 0.5 teaspoon Salt (Or to taste)
- 0.25 teaspoon Black Pepper (Or to taste)
- 1.5 teaspoons White Powdered Sugar
- 1 drop Green Vegetable Food Coloring (optional) (Optional, for brighter color)
Instructions
- 1Rinse the dried peas in a colander. Place the peas in a large bowl and cover with plenty of cold water. Soak overnight (at least 12 hours). Discard any peas that float to the top.
- 2Drain the soaked peas and place them in a large pot. Cover with fresh cold water (about 4 cups). Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer gently until the peas are tender. This may take 1 to 3 hours, depending on the age and quality of the peas. Check occasionally and add more water if needed to keep the peas covered.
- 3Once the peas are tender, add the fresh mint sprigs. Simmer for 1 minute to infuse the flavor. Remove from heat and strain the peas, discarding the mint sprigs.
- 4Return the strained peas to the pot. Add the butter, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir gently to combine. If desired, add a tiny drop of green food coloring for a brighter green color. Serve hot.
