Simple Boiled Brussels Sprouts
A simple recipe for boiling Brussels sprouts, finished with butter and lemon juice.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Brussels sprouts (Fresh)
- 6 cups Water (For boiling)
- 1 teaspoon Salt (For boiling water)
- 2 tablespoons Butter (Unsalted)
- 0.25 teaspoon Salt (To taste)
- 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (Freshly ground, to taste)
- 0.125 teaspoon Nutmeg (Freshly grated, to taste)
- 1 tablespoon Lemon juice (Freshly squeezed)
Instructions
- 1Wash the Brussels sprouts in cold water. Trim away any discolored or decayed outer leaves and cut off the stem end. Halve or quarter larger sprouts so they are roughly the same size.
- 2Bring the water to a rolling boil in a large saucepan. Add the salt. Add the Brussels sprouts to the boiling water. Ensure the water continues to boil throughout the cooking process. Do not cover the saucepan.
- 3Cook the Brussels sprouts until they are tender, about 10-15 minutes. Test for doneness by piercing with a fork; they should be easily pierced but not mushy.
- 4Drain the Brussels sprouts thoroughly. Place them back in the saucepan. Add the butter, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat.
- 5Serve the Brussels sprouts immediately. They can be served with toasted or fried bread, if desired.
