Plain Boiled Onions
A simple recipe for boiling onions, best served on toast with butter.
Ingredients
- 2 large Spanish Onions (Spanish onions are preferred for their mild flavor.)
- 6 cups Water (Enough to cover the onions.)
- 1 tsp Salt (To taste)
- 4 slices Toast (Dry toast, for serving)
- 2 tbsp Butter (Optional, for serving)
Instructions
- 1Peel the Spanish onions and trim the ends. If the onions are very large, you can cut them in half or quarters to ensure even cooking.
- 2Place the prepared onions in a large pot and cover them with water. Add salt to the water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for approximately 3 hours, or until the onions are very tender. Check the water level periodically and add more water if necessary to keep the onions submerged.
- 3Once the onions are tender, drain them well. Serve hot on dry toast. Add butter to the onions on the plate, if desired.
