Plain Boiled Artichokes
A simple recipe for boiling artichokes, served with a classic sauce.
Ingredients
- 4 number Large artichokes
- 2 tablespoons Salt (For soaking and boiling)
- 8 cups Water (For soaking and boiling)
- 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper (Ground)
- 1 tablespoon Savory herbs (Dried or fresh)
- 2 tablespoons Butter (Optional)
Instructions
- 1In a large bowl, combine water and salt. Submerge the artichokes upside down in the salted water and let them soak to remove any insects. Soak for at least 15 minutes.
- 2Remove the artichokes from the water. Trim off the ends of the leaves and the stalk. Pull off any tough or discolored leaves from the base.
- 3In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil. The water should be deep enough to nearly cover the artichokes. Add salt, pepper, savory herbs, and butter (if using). Place the artichokes in the boiling water, leaving the tips of the leaves exposed if possible. Reduce heat to medium and boil until the artichokes are tender. This will take approximately 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the artichokes. You can test for doneness by piercing the base with a fork; it should be easily pierced.
- 4Drain the artichokes upside down to remove excess water. Serve hot with your choice of sauce, such as melted butter, sauce Allemande, or Dutch sauce.
