Orange Fritters

Orange Fritters

A classic dessert featuring orange segments soaked in a flavored syrup, dipped in batter, and fried until golden brown.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium Oranges (Thin-skinned, ripe oranges are best.)
  • 0.5 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Brandy (optional) (Or other liqueur of your choice)
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Egg
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil (For frying)

Instructions

  1. 1Peel the oranges thinly, being careful to remove as much of the white pith as possible. Divide each orange into about six segments. Gently rub the sugar on the outside of one of the oranges to release its oils and flavor the sugar.
  2. 2In a small saucepan, combine the flavored sugar with 1/4 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in the brandy (if using).
  3. 3Place the orange segments in a shallow dish and pour the syrup over them. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, turning occasionally. Remove any pips.
  4. 4In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, egg, milk, and salt until smooth. The batter should be thick enough to coat the orange segments but thin enough to drip off easily.
  5. 5Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Dip each orange segment into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Carefully drop the battered orange segments into the hot oil, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  6. 6Serve the orange fritters immediately while they are still warm and crispy. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
