Mashed Turnips

Mashed Turnips

A simple and comforting side dish of mashed turnips, enhanced with cream and butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Turnips (Old turnips are best)
  • 0.25 cup Milk (Or cream)
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt (To taste)
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black Pepper (To taste)

Instructions

  1. 1Peel the turnips and cut them into 1-inch cubes.
  2. 2Place the turnips in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until very tender, about 30-45 minutes. The cooking time will vary depending on the age and size of the turnips.
  3. 3Drain the turnips well. Pass the cooked turnips through a food mill or mash them thoroughly with a potato masher until smooth. For a smoother texture, you can use a ricer or a wire sieve.
  4. 4In a saucepan, warm the mashed turnips with milk (or cream) and butter over low heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If the pulp is very moist, cook over low heat in a frying pan to remove excess moisture, stirring frequently.
