German Fritters
A simple recipe for German fritters made with stale cake, milk, vanilla, and fried to a golden brown.
Ingredients
- 4 cups Stale cake, cut into small pieces (About 4 cups of small pieces)
- 1 cup Milk
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons Sugar
- 1 large Egg
- 1 cup Breadcrumbs
- 1 cup Vegetable oil (For frying)
Instructions
- 1In a bowl, combine the milk, vanilla extract, and sugar. Add the stale cake pieces and soak for about 5 minutes, until slightly softened but not soggy.
- 2Remove the soaked cake pieces from the milk mixture and let them drain slightly on a wire rack for a few minutes. In a separate bowl, beat the egg well. Place the breadcrumbs in another bowl.
- 3Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Dip each cake piece in the beaten egg, then coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs. Carefully place the coated cake pieces in the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown. Remove the fritters from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- 4Serve the German fritters warm. They can be enjoyed plain or with a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of syrup.
