Scones
These classic scones offer a delightful combination of a tender interior and a slightly crisp exterior, perfect for a comforting breakfast or afternoon treat. The recipe uses simple ingredients like flour, baking powder, and butter, creating a rich, buttery flavor. Serve warm with butter, jam, or clotted cream for an elegant and satisfying experience.
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons Baking powder
- 1/3 teaspoon Salt
- 2 tablespoons Butter (or vegetable shortening) (Originally lard. Substituted with butter for modern preference. Can also use vegetable shortening for similar texture.)
- 1 Egg
- 2/3 cup Milk
- 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
Instructions
- 1In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- 2Cut in the butter (or shortening) into the flour mixture using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 3In a small bowl, beat the egg. Add all but one teaspoon of the beaten egg to the flour mixture. Gradually add the milk, mixing with a knife until a soft dough forms.
- 4Pat the dough into a square shape, about 1/2 inch thick. Brush the top with the remaining teaspoon of egg and sprinkle with the sugar and cinnamon (mixed thoroughly). Cut into 1 1/2 inch squares. Place the scones on a baking sheet.
- 5Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake for 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
