These classic popcorn balls are a sweet and crunchy treat, perfect for any occasion. The recipe combines a rich, buttery syrup with freshly popped corn, creating a satisfying texture and a delightful flavor. This simple recipe is a fun and easy way to enjoy a nostalgic snack, ideal for parties or a cozy night in.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Molasses
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1 tablespoon White vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon Baking soda (Originally saleratus (historical name for baking soda).)
  • 2 quarts Freshly popped corn
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Instructions

  1. 1In a medium saucepan, combine the light brown sugar, granulated sugar, molasses, water, vinegar, and butter. Cook over medium heat, without stirring, until the mixture reaches the hard-ball stage (250-265°F or 121-130°C). Test by dropping a small amount of the syrup into cold water; it should form a hard ball that clicks against the side of the glass.
  2. 2Remove the saucepan from the heat and immediately stir in the baking soda. The mixture will foam up. In a large bowl, place the freshly popped corn and sprinkle with salt. Pour the hot syrup over the corn and mix thoroughly to coat. When the mixture is partially cool enough to handle, moisten your hands with water and press the corn mixture into balls of uniform size.
  3. 3Place the popcorn balls in a cool place to set. Allow them to cool completely before serving.
